June is bustin’ out all over! So sang Nettie Fowler in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel. June is certainly chock full of holidays and observances from those well known around the world to some important dates to keep in mind. With the temperature heating up and the days getting longer, it’s time to bust open the doors and soak up the sun. As we approach the Summer Solstice on June 20th, we should also take this time to look inwards and reflect on how much growth we have experienced over the last few months and how we hope to grow this Summer season. Read below for a breakdown of June’s monthly observances to keep in mind, especially for those with DEIB on the mind.

An important date to keep in mind is June 26th. On this day in 2015, the United States Supreme Court ruled for the legalization of same-sex marriage

Juneteenth

Five black arms connected in unity

President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation into order in January 1863, however not all enslaved African Americans were not notified of their freedom until almost two and a half years later when - on June 19, 1865 -  federal troops marched into Galveston, Texas to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. In 2017, then Vice President Biden officially declared June 19th as a national holiday.

Today, Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom, encourages education around slavery, and celebrates the many achievements from the African American community. Most Juneteenth commemorations include family gatherings, picnics, music, dancing, and community services.
